We do this in a competent, compassionate and personalised manner, offering maximum privacy, comfort and convenience for our patients. We offer a full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery procedures with multiple areas of expertise including corrective jaw surgery, dental implant procedures and wisdom teeth removal. We also diagnose and treat facial injuries, TMJ disorders and jaw structure problems.
Dr. Ian Young
Ian is a dental graduate of the University of Queensland and worked for a short period in private practice before pursuing a keen interest in Rugby League while living in the south of France. He also played Rugby Union for the London Irish Club for 4 years. He continued his dental career for several years in England before entering a Masters program in Oral Surgery at the Eastman Dental Hospital (London). On completing his postgraduate degree and obtaining a Fellowship from The College of Surgeons in Ireland, he completed a further 18 months of training at The Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead.
Ian returned to Australia in 1991 to complete 2 years Senior Registrar training in Adelaide, only to then undertake a Medical Degree at the University of Adelaide. On obtaining his Medical Degree he returned to Queensland to live on the Sunshine Coast, completing his medical internship and subsequently establishing the first Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery specialist practice on the Sunshine Coast.
The practice is currently located at the Sunshine Coast Surgical and Specialist Centre at Birtinya. In addition, Ian has provided Oral and Maxillofacial Services in Gladstone for nearly 20 years. Special interests in his field include Orthognathic Surgery and almost 30 years experience in placing dental implants. Ian has a keen interest in Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery and has traveled on a number of occasions to the Philippines and China to participate as a Volunteer Surgeon to less privileged children.
Dr. Jim McGown
Jim graduated in Dentistry from the Adelaide University in 1992 and then headed to private practice in country Victoria for a year. He then returned to his hometown of Hobart for two years, working as an Oral Surgery Registrar and in private practice.
Jim returned to Adelaide to tutor dental students and work in a public clinic. He then moved to the UK in 1997, working as Senior House Officer in Oral Surgery in Salisbury and Southampton. Jim began accredited Oral Surgery in New South Wales in 1998, before moving to Brisbane to complete a Medical Degree at the University of Queensland. After completing his internship in Townsville, Jim returned to Sydney to obtain his Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2006. Jim moved to the Sunshine Coast in January 2007 to commence practice at the Maxillofacial and Implant Centre at Lake Kawana.
Dr. Kemal Akbiyik
Kemal grew up in Brisbane, completing his dental qualifications at the University of Queensland and his medical qualifications at the University of Newcastle. Kemal currently resides in Brisbane with his wife and daughter and has clinical interest in trauma, reconstructive surgery and implantology.
With Kemal on board, it is our aim to continue to provide you and your patients with prompt service and to extend our service on a more frequent basis to Central Queensland. For those participating, you may be racing against Kemal in the highly anticipated STIG competition and we will be introducing Kemal at our Annual End of Financial Year Bash.
Dr. Chris Barker
Dr Chris Barker graduated from dental school at the University of Adelaide in 2004 and in 2005 was awarded First Class Honours for completion of an honours research program. He completed his Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry, specialising in Periodontology, at Griffith University in 2014.
Chris has worked in government and private practice roles in Adelaide, Brisbane and regional Queensland. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and he has completed the Long Surgical Course Certification from Implant Team International (ITI).
Chris has been a junior lecturer and clinical tutor at the University of Adelaide and Griffith University. Chris is also a published author and his research on modifying factors of bone resorption and bone production has been presented at domestic and international conferences. He received research grants from the Australian Periodontology Research Foundation and the Australian Society of Orthodontics.
He is currently secretary of the Australian Society of Periodontology (ASP) and a member of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP), ITI, the Australian Osseointergration Society (AOS) and the Australian Dental Association (ADA).
Chris lives in Brisbane with his wife Wendy, and they have two young boys. He enjoys getting outdoors and has a keen interest in rugby and mountain trekking.
Our Administrative staff has years of experience meeting patients’ needs. Beginning with scheduling your initial consultation, they will guide and help you receive the care you desire, be available to answer any questions you may have, and assist you with any administrative requirements for hospital bookings, forms and correspondence.
Our surgical team has extensive experience in assisting with Oral and Maxillofacial surgical procedures, and are fully trained and appropriately qualified to take care of you during and after your procedure. Each member of our staff is CPR certified. All of our team members are well-trained professionals that will help you with your needs.
