This type of surgery will take place in a hospital under a general anaesthetic. Genioplasty can be performed at the same time as other corrective jaw surgery.

The surgery will not result in visible scars on the face as it is performed from the inside of the mouth. An incision is made through the gum on the inside of the lower lip, so the surgeon can access to the lower jawbone and chin. The chin is then cut with a small saw to allow it to be broken in a controlled manner. Once the chin is moved into its new position, it is held in place with small metal plates and screws, and the gum inside the mouth is stitched back into place.
