Concerning lesions that require an evaluation include sores that bleed, sores with firmness or thickening, ulcers that don’t heal, red or white patches or pigmented skin lesions with the ABCDs: asymmetry, border irregularity, color variegation, and large diameter. An early warning sign may also be difficulty in swallowing.

The inside of the mouth is normally lined with a special type of skin (mucosa) that is smooth and coral pink in color. Any changes in this appearance could be a warning sign for a pathological process with the most serious of these being oral cancer.

Cysts or tumours may also develop in the jawbones — with the growths being locally aggressive, destroying structures in the area and displacing teeth. Such lesions may be the result of the developmental process of the teeth.

Your Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon at MIC is qualified to evaluate and treat such oral lesions. Our evaluation and treatment may include observation, biopsy, laser removal or excision, with concerning areas evaluated under a microscope to confirm a diagnosis.

Our staff at MIC strongly recommend performing an oral cancer self-examination monthly, as the mouth is one of the body’s most important warning systems.

Please contact our compassionate staff at MIC if we can be of further assistance you.
